Legal Description

In addition to requirements for each document detailed on the Instrument Checklist, there are specific page format requirements detailed in the Ohio Revised Code and legal description requirements.

The Williams County Recorder’s Office requires legal descriptions of property on all documents provide identification for property to include:

    for townships

  • township, county, and state;
  • quarter;
  • section;
  • range;
    or within incorporated towns or villages

  • the town or village;
  • county and state;
  • subdivision;
  • lot;

These details allow for accurate indexing of property ownership. This information cannot be within the survey points of the legal description. The correct indexing of property allows individuals to verify ownership conveyance throughout the counties history.  If you are interested in researching property history, geographic index books are located in the Recorder’s office on the second floor of the Williams County Courthouse.
